Hour 1: Stop the Source
If the water is coming from a supply line, shut off the main water valve. If it's a roof leak during a storm, place buckets and move furniture away from the affected area. Do not enter standing water if there is any chance it has contacted electrical outlets or panels.
Hours 1-4: Call a Restoration Company
This is the most important step. A certified restoration team will begin water extraction immediately using truck-mounted pumps and portable extractors. Hours 4-12: Structural Drying Begins

Your restoration company will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to map the full extent of the damage, including moisture hidden behind walls and under flooring.
Hours 12-24: Document Everything
Take photos of all damage before cleanup progresses further. Your restoration company should be documenting with Xactimate or similar estimating software for your insurance claim. Save any damaged materials your adjuster may want to inspect.
